01 - THE NATURE OF CLAY

Clay begins simply - earth, water and time.

Before it becomes a cup, a bowl or a small object for everyday use, it is simply a piece of earth waiting to be shaped. There is something special about working with a material that already has its own character. It can be soft and smooth, sometimes a little stubborn, and it always seems to have a mind of its own.

Shaped by hand and transformed by fire, clay becomes something made to be held, used and lived with.

And because every piece passes through a pair of hands, no two are ever quite the same. A slightly softer curve, a different surface, a small variation in shape — these things are part of the process.

Earth becomes form.

And form becomes something we can bring into our everyday lives.
