02 - INSIDE THE KILN

The kiln changes everything.

Up until the moment a piece goes into the fire, there is still a sense that it could become something else. Then the door closes, the temperature rises, and the clay begins its transformation.

Glazes move. Colours deepen. Surfaces change. What looked soft and quiet before firing can come out completely different.

There is always a little uncertainty in opening the kiln. You can have an idea of how something will look, but fire has the final say.

That is part of what makes ceramics so interesting.

What comes out is never completely predictable.

Fire leaves its mark — and sometimes, those unexpected details become the most beautiful part.
